Position, location, facilities
Staff were not welcoming. We felt out of place and believe we were the only Brits there! On arrival, initially we had a few problems with the room and facilities and these were not dealt with properly. I would not recommend this hotel for a lone couple. A group may be welcome though?

The view is spectacular. Breakfast buffet offers a wide variety, one of the best we've had.
This hotel may have once been 4 stars but no longer. The older gentleman at the reception is a disrespectful, arrogant individual who should be fired. However, the rest of the reception staff was quite helpful. We received the room and it was clearly unclean (used towels, unemptied bathroom trash can containing filthy toilet paper, unchanged bed linens, bed side table with sticky residue if you know what I mean i.e. bring your own UV lamp). One morning, we were in the room when the cleaning ladies appeared. They basically only swept the floor. We had to ask the front desk for clean towels. The old reception guy asked the other desk clerk to deal with us because he couldn't care less. Many other negatives but no more space to write!

Layout of the resort and atmosphere were excellent, reception staff and entertainment staff very good, the location is very scenic. Lovely pools, great for children, and wonderful swimming in the cove. Enjoyed the spa and even the gym facilities. Everything was clean and well maintained.
The food was not very good quality and the buffet offer was quite repetitive. Chicken wings, liver and tongue for one evening meal. Fruit at dinner limited to melon all week. We were happy to go out for dinner.

The room was well designed but the bathroom smelt really bad making the whole studio smell musty and mouldy. We sneezed and coughed all night

Swimming in a dramatic location, among the cliffs. Large room. If updated, has potential to be much better.
Old and not kept up. If this hotel were updated, it could be something. It has a neglected feel, as if they ran out of money 20 years ago. Lots of Russsian guests, as if shipped in by the busload. Staff is rude and not even Greek; most are from Eastern Europe and don't want to be there. The Russian saleswoman in the hotel market is smoking up a storm, so everything in the market smells like cigarette smoke. If you want to be in an old, neglected Eastern European hotel, this is the place. If you want an authentic, friendly Greek resort, go elsewhere.

Kalypso Cretan Village Resort And Spa in Plakias was a fantastic experience. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the food at the restaurant was excellent. The rooms had a fantastic view and the three swimming pools were in good working condition. The location was ideal, with breathtaking views and easy access to a free tennis court. it exceeded my expectations and provided great value for money.
Everything is what I need and want.

Be sure to have detailed instructions on your last mile when traveling by car. Kalypso is not that easy to find. The basic idea is that when you're 1 km East and about to enter Plakias you need turing left off the main road. The turn is just around an Elin petrol station (spelled in Greek looks rather like 'Ehiv'). Then it's 3 km through the mountain dirt road, to be safe in crossroads simply keep right. Parking in evenings is quite a task, consider leaving your car in a place where you feel it will be of a less trouble to others. Colorful pebble-and-sand beach is available to the Eastern side of the place (Damnoni). One needs to go 120 steps up there and walk some 25 minutes through a large passage in rocks. Kalypso itself is a great base to visit other places. Go to Hora Sfakion (and have a boat trip to Loutro from there) through Frangokastello that has the greatest beach with some astonishing mountain views. The road to Phaestos lies trough Spili with its ancient fountains. Even Hania is not that far away. From Plakias a large taxi boat can take you to the Palm Beach on schedule, the place is much overrated and has nothing special about it indeed. Instead take a car and go to Moni Preveli that is just above the beach. Who needs Samaria Gorge when there are two immense canyons, one just West of Plakias, the other on the way to Spili.
The hotel itself is quite depressing, though you get used to it since it's such a picturesque location. Rooms are typical 'Greek' 4-star meaning 3+ at the very best. Funnily all furniture is new and fully functional. Local dining is quite modest, it's advisable not to engage with half-boards (and by no means have all-inclusives). In-hotel swimming is not that fun. Pools are infested with chlorine, and sea swimming is tough but the water is just fantastic there.
